Chemical and Proteomic Mass Spectrometry Core Facility

The Department of Chemistry is home to a university-wide Mass Spec Core and offers a wide range of mass spectrometric services, from basic mass measurement to complex proteome analyses. We encourage investigators to contact the Mass Spec Core regarding their experimental needs, so that we can discuss how to get the best results for you. The Mass Spec Core is located in the Education Wing of Oliver Hall and is supported by the university, the Mary E. Kapp Fund and the National Science Foundation. This state-of-the-art facility now supports VCU research scientists in areas including chemistry, proteomics, cancer research and life sciences.

Department of Chemistry Instrumentation Facility

The departmental instrumentation facility houses several modern instruments for use by upper-level undergraduates and graduate students. Instruments in the facility include liquid chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, ion chromatography, inductively coupled plasma spectrometry, and infrared, Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy.

The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Center

The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Center is located in the Temple building. The facility has three NMR spectrometers, Varian Inova-400 MHz, Varian Mercury-300 MHz and Bruker AVANCEIII 600 MHz. Three high-performance Linux OS workstations are available for data analysis. The NMR facility serves a large community of users within the Department of Chemistry, other on-campus departments and industrial companies. The spectrometers operate on a 24/7 basis, with fully open access. After preliminary operational training, users are granted permission to perform experiments on their own. The investigator should be familiar with the advantages of each instrument in order to make intelligent choices about the most appropriate instrument to use.

Nanomaterials Characterization Center

Over the past several years, VCU has invested in a new Nanomaterials Core Characterization Facility. This facility houses over $5 million worth of new equipment. This shared user facility is open to researchers from all across the VCU campus as well as researchers from other academic institutions. For more information on the instruments in the facility goto www.nano.vcu.edu/ncc.
